Commerce is a great engine of innovation, and when new inventions are born, many come from commercial opportunities. However, the long-term importance of innovation is measured by its significant social impact. By enabling the explosive growth of mobiles that bring the Internet to hundreds of millions of people each year, Android chipsets (the brains and internal organs of Android smartphones) are recognized as the most important innovations of the early 21st century.
Mobile Smartphone invention is considered one of the gadgets which have made everything reachable through a single touch.
A rudimentary smartphone made from Google’s free Android operating system (OS), touch screen, and battery-powered chipset is driving the explosive expansion of the mobile Internet. Currently, more than 80% of smartphones run on Android, and there are various forms of smartphones equipped with Android OS, but the basic model of combining inexpensive components and open-source OS is an emerging market for the mobile Internet. Opening up has made a big difference. Startup smartphone brands with little technical know-how can buy chips to make phones.
The average price of a mobile application processor in 2012 was $ 15–17, but a low-cost chip could be purchased for just $ 7. In 2013, I was able to buy a low-end tip for $ 5. Other basic necessities were also cheap. Touch screens cost $ 11 to $ 13 and batteries cost $ 5 to $ 6.
The low-end market has exploded as chipmakers such as Mediatek, Qualcomm and Spreadtrum have pushed prices down over market share. Year-over-year growth has been driven primarily by rapid adoption in emerging markets. Approximately 725 million smartphones were sold in 2012, and approximately 1 billion smartphones were sold in 2013, and it is expected to exceed 1 billion for the first time in 2014. Most of the billion or more smartphones this year will be shipped to consumers in emerging markets. There are 225 million in China, 225 million in India, 47 million in Brazil, and 46 million in Indonesia.
In these markets, it’s already possible to buy an Android smartphone for about $ 30. By the end of the year, prices are expected to fall below $ 20.
The potential impact on people’s lives is unlikely. For example, imagine the changes in India this year. One-third of the population will soon access the World Wide Web via smartphones.
The Internet can draw emerging market consumers into the world’s middle class. Smartphones are the path to empowerment that enables people to increase their wealth and educate themselves. Low-cost devices allow billions of people to connect to online banking, healthcare resources, learning and work opportunities, and social media. Only a few years ago, this was almost impossible, but now almost half of the world’s population lives on a daily basis.
This is not just a result. This is a technological revolution that is changing the world faster than any other country in history. We hope that more innovations will be seen in this century, most of which will have a positive impact, but when the next great invention arrives, people around the world will learn about it through their smartphones. That is the legacy of Android chipsets.
